As others have pointed out, the plot of this book is a bit far-fetched, but I loved it. It reminded me of some of the old Disney movies, where a hapless klutz is mistakenly thrust into becoming a sheriff or deputy. So yes, this book was far-fetched, but in a hilarious and engaging manner. It was simply a fun read where the suspension of disbelief didn't matter, because as improbable as the story was, it was entertaining.

I am pretty much a stickler for authenticity in regency and UK based historical romances. There are rules for classes, servants, women, and so on, that I expect to be mostly followed. Glaring anachronisms spoil a story for me and annoy me when basic, easy research would prevent the anachronisms. However, for some reason, I am pretty lenient when it comes to western romances. This story does have modern language and it does have anachronisms, but I still loved it.

The plot was funny and the hero was extremely likeable. He was a naive, hapless screw-up in many ways, but he was kind, good, basically honest despite his circumstances, and he was very loveable. The heroine was likeable, as were other secondary characters, and the villains were solid, stereotypical bad guys, the kind who foreclose on elderly widows and tie heroines to the railroad tracks, while twirling their moustaches. What's not to like about that?

This is a lighthearted story, perfect for when you need something to lift the spirits and make you laugh. If you approach this book looking for period accuracy and a believable story, you will be disappointed. However, if you are open minded and approach it as one of those books where the magic of make-believe outweighs the flaws in accuracy, you will probably love it. I view it the way I view fairy tales; how believable are they?

P.S. There are graphic sex scenes within marriage.

The Wrong Husband Ruth Ann Nordin 9781452857237 Books Reviews

In reference to comments by another reviewer...I do love detailed and highly-researched historical novels...when I'm reading about truly famous characters, events or royalty.

For a cute, "feel-good" novel like The Wrong Husband, lots of research into historical conversation patterns or whatever doesn't even occur to me.

What did I like about the story? That an unexpected opportunity for love opened for Jenny, that Owen was a genuinely good man in many respects, that he unreservedly loved his wife and her child, that Jenny's son was so open and joyful about having a father.

There are a lot of things to enjoy in this novel, and I'm glad I had the chance to read it.
Owen did not realize what his future was going to be like when he stole those clothes to cover his naked body she he was caught bathing in that lake. It was good the sheriff had mistaken him for the deputy that he was waiting on. Owen married Jennie to keep her son from the man who had fathered him. Owen Russell was taking the place of Irving Spencer but he did sign his own name on the marriage documents and no one noticed. You will have to read the rest of the story to see why that despicable Clyde wanted to take Jeremy from Jennie. It is worth the read.
I have read and loved several Ruth Ann Nordin books, carefully avoiding any marked as comedy. I missed any signs here!

I chose this book when I saw that it featured Jenny - a strong character in the Larson family, first featured in `Eye of the Beholder' a single mother battling the prejudice of the narrow minded people in town.

This book is really lightweight compared to the excellent Eye of the Beholder and good His Redeeming Bride

Owen starts well, helping his aunt, but soon the story becomes quite farcical. While I really liked the relationship between Owen and Jenny and her little boy, there was no real depth to any of it. Disappointing based on the previous family stories.

I felt that it was a lost opportunity to develop Jenny's story seriously as the idea of her finding happiness with Owen could have been as rewarding as the story of Mary and Dave in E of the B.

If you are looking for excellent emotional romance, give this one a miss.

If you looking for a light romantic read with comedy elements, this may be just the ticket.
Clyde Jenkins keeps showing up and trying to see his son. He had left Jenny Larson when she became pregnant and now he has returned. Jenny fears that he will try to take her son, even though she never married Clyde.Sheriff Meyer does what he can to protect her and Jeremy but knows that he can't always be around so he suggests she marry because another man's presence may keep Clyde away as well protect Jenny. Jenny agrees and the sheriff suggests his cousin, Irving Spencer, who is to be his new deputy when he arrives; when the sheriff writes his cousin, Irving agrees to the marriage upon his arrival. Irving, according to the sheriff, is a big man and definitely someone to put the scare in Clyde. Enter Owen Russell, a man who makes his living fishing in Louisiana, a man who does not know anything about guns, except run when someone is shooting at you, a man who cannot use a rope, a man who is on the run because he has killed a man(with a knife) in self defense and is now appearing on wanted posters. When Owen shows up in Omaha, the sheriff thinks Owen is his long lost cousin Irving; Owen is trying to figure out how to get out of town until he sees Jenny and is told that she is his new bride to be. Seeing how pretty she is, he goes along with the ruse, marries Jenny, announces a "miracle" when Irving's impotency is cured and becomes the new deputy, using a fishing rod and a whole lot of luck to capture bad guys. He falls for Jenny and her son and wants to tell the truth but doesn't, then the real Irving shows up. A funny story, Owen is like a western days Barney Fife; his heart is in the right place much of the time but unfortunately his brain isn't.
