Afraid To Die An Alvarez Pescoli Novel Lisa Jackson Books
This is a very annoying book, full of annoying people. Lisa Jackson relies too much on coincidences. For instance, what are the odds that the boy whom Selena Alvarez gave up for adoption in podunk Washington, 16 or 17 years ago just happens to break into her home in Grizzly Falls, Montana? Alvarez immediately jumps to the assumption that the kid who broke into her home is her son. Jackson sort of attempts to explain this by explaining at the end of the book that the kid found his birth mother by hacking into court records. That strains my credibility just a bit too much. There also is the fact that Alvarez, supposedly a competent, professional cop, repeatedly does stupid things like not calling for back up when she is attacked in her garage, and her attacker gets into a fight with her ardent suitor. You would think she would know better because years before in another city, she caused the same suitor to lose his job as a police officer by getting in the way of a stake out and then failing to call for back up.
But no, she keeps doing such stupid things. Such as when she knows that the creepy serial killer, who is freezing his victims to death and then encasing their bodies in blocks of ice, is fixated on her and has sent her threatening messages warning that she is next. Even knowing this, when she gets a text from him with a picture of her son, she goes tearing off to rescue him without, you guessed it, requesting back up or letting her partner, or even her suitor, who is acting as her bodyguard, know.
While we're at it, let me mention how much I hate it when writers make their villains focus on their detectives. I know they are trying to show a personal element in the case in order to emphasize the detective's motivation for solving the case, but it is cliche and just plain stupid.
In addition, I could have done without all the sex scenes between Dylan, the ardent suitor, and Alvarez. For one thing, after a brutal rape when she was a teenager, Alvarez has a psychological aversion to sexual intimacy. However, even though once before, she and Dylan were unable to complete the act due to Alvarez's block, suddenly all her inhibitions are swept away and she and Dylan turn into set crazed rabbits. In the era of #MeToo, this seems to trivialize rape and the long lasting effects upon the victims. It also perpetuates the myth that all it takes to overcome sexual inhibitions is, well, lust. Uh-huh.
Okay, so what did I like about the book? The serial killer's methodology was unique, interesting and terrifying. Alvarez's partner, Regan Pescoli, was very competent, exhibiting more common sense in her little finger than Alvarez did in her entire body. I also found the depiction of Pescoli as a single working mom, trying to instill a sense of family in her two thoroughly unpleasant children at Christmas realistic. Actually, all the kids in this book were unpleasant, as were all the ex-husbands and most of the current ones. I think Jackson has a thing against married and divorced men.
I also liked that when Alvarez finally came face to face with the killer, she and one of the other victims were able to fight and kill him before the cavalry in the form of the ardent suitor and police backup came to rescue her. Too bad Alvarez didn't exhibit the same level of competence throughout the rest of the book.
This is the second book I've read in this series. I'm not sure if I'll read any more or not. After reading this one, I may just put the series on my blacklist.

Afraid To Die An Alvarez Pescoli Novel Lisa Jackson Books Reviews
Love Lisa Jackson's mystery series. Alvarez and Pescoli novels grab you at the beginning and don't let go until the very end. The mystery and excitement of the hunt keeps going all the way to the end and even though you know the bad guy is going to get caught, her story line makes you wonder. Highly recommend to anyone enjoying a great mystery mixed with fear, Might not be good for the weak of heart for late night reading, but I loved it.
I was introduced to this series by receiving book one as a gift. See my review here. I thorougly enjoyed that book and have read every book as its been released. When this book was released, I quickly purchased it, but didn't read it right away. In fact, I forgot I had it on my until I saw Ready to Die on Netgalley which is to be released at the end of the month and will be reviewed later on this blog as well.
I love the balance of crime solving, mystery, as well as the romance side stories that are going on in this series. I know many readers don't like romance in their mystery stories, but I like the dimension that it brings to the overall series. This aspect helps link the books in the series together so well. However, these books can also be read as stand alones, as there is briefly an update at the beginning of each book to fill in holes or gaps as they appear in the story.
I like how the author has created two very strong female detectives who are so very different from one another. Their relationship albeit not a typical friend-friend relationship was definitely tested and proven in this book. Det Pescoli is still struggling with her kids, and her ex and his wife, and with the fact that so much of her time is taken up with work. She is a hard working detective who obviously has earned her position in the department. Det Alvarez role in the current case takes on a personal note in more ways than one. Readers get to learn a little more about her past and really what makes up the character of Selena.
I also like how the author writes from the suspect's point of view and as a reader we are given a little more into what he sees and is thinking. There is not a lot of time spent from his POV, but enough to provide more information as to possibly who the suspect may be. I also think this adds more tension for me as a reader when the victims find themselves in their situation.
I highly recommend this book to readers of romantic mystery and those who just like a good mystery. The series is awesome and if you haven't begun reading already, you won't have to wait for each book. Enjoy!!
Okay, here's what you need to know about the "To Die" series by Lisa Jackson - the best thing about it is the scenery. The series takes place each year around Christmas time during the "blizzard of the century." Reading about the cold and snow and ice and other elements of Christmas scenery in small town Montana is the best part of the story.
Here's one more thing you need to know about the "To Die" series - Alvarez and Pescoli must be the worst detectives in the history of the world. They go through the entire book continually turning up corpses but never really getting any closer to the killer, that is, until the killer decides to involve one of them. I'm not entirely sure what keeps me coming back, except the stories, character development and writing are pretty decent. At this point in the series, however, both Alvarez and Pescoli are involved with men that they are determined to push away because they are strong and independent and perfectly able to do it themselves, dammit! Pescoli, especially, is annoying as hell at this point. She is involved with smoking hot Nate Santana, who's great in bed, loves her and wants to be a father to her wayward children. Oh, and did I mention he wants to marry her? But no, Pescoli wants to keep failing miserably with her underachieving and disrespectful children to prove she can do it on her own. Oy.
