Twenty poems, six essays and 21 drawings make up this personal account that celebrated poet Marge Piercy calls "a brilliant narrative. Many people have written about their experiences with mental disorders, but few are excellent poets able to communicate the arc of what they went through in readable, powerful and emotionally charged poems." Filled with heart-wrenching details and, finally, with hope, Bipolar Disorder for Beginners covers a decade of struggle, success, relapse and triumph.

I received this book as a gift. I have bipolar disorder. I agree with Rae Rose that Kay Redfield Jamison is an inspiration (MD psychiatrist who also has bipolar disorder). Rae Rose is also an inspiration. She is open & honest about her experiences before and after getting help through medications. She goes into detail about her stays in psych' wards & all the intense, difficult events in her life. She also writes about the good things in her life. Which is encouraging for those of us who have a brain disorder.
She tells people who have mental illnesses to Stay on Their Meds. This is great advice. I would not be alive without my psych' meds.
Her sketches are whimsical & fit the events they illustrate.
She also gives us many of her wonderful poems. She is a truly talented poet.

Bipolar Disorder for Beginners Rae Rose 9781492747420 Books Reviews
Excellent poems about the internal experience of bipolar disorder. Recommended for those like me who have people with bipolar disorder in their families. Also for anyone who wants to know more about this experience, and anyone who likes poetry that is well-written, striking and deep, also delightful, has a sense of humor, and is not pedestrian. This explains what it's like to have bipolar disorder better than other books that take a scientific, psychological, or practical approach, and look from the outside. This looks from the inside, rounding out the library of information about BP.
I was intrigued by the title and so bought this book. It is a very well written account of life with a mental illness. While reading, I feel like I'm really inside the author's head and feeling what she's feeling. It has really changed my understanding of Bipolar Disorder. The author wrote with book in such a way that anyone can relate.
Love this poet! Reading this gave me a greater sense of what it is like to experience the waves that are the result of living with bipolar disorder. But better yet, I love Rae Rose's poetry. I look forward to many more poems from this humerous and insightful poet.
This firsthand account of life battles caused by Bipolar Disorder comes from a brilliant young writer whose essays and poems have drawn accolades from one of the most celebrated writers of our time, Marge Piercy. "Bipolar Disorder for Beginners" is filled with painful episodes and hard-edged insights that lead to hope. With drawings by the author that will make Lynda Barry fans smile, this is a one of a kind effort -- one of those little miracles that change people's lives.
